The word counter splits your text on whitespace and filters out empty tokens to count words. Characters are counted using the string length (with spaces) and by removing all whitespace (without spaces). All processing runs entirely in your browser — no text is sent to any server.

Questions about the numbers
How each figure is calculated, what the marks mean, and where your text goes. Short version: it never leaves your browser.
Counting
We provide three reading speeds: slow (150 wpm) for ESL readers or dense content, average (238 wpm) which is the industry standard for blog articles, and fast (400 wpm) for scanning. Most tools only show one speed. The "average" figure of 238 wpm comes from research on silent reading rates for online content.
There are no hard limits imposed by this tool. Very large documents (hundreds of thousands of words) may cause the browser to respond slowly since all analysis runs in JavaScript on your device. For files over a few hundred pages, copy-pasting a section at a time may be more practical.
Readability
Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease is a formula that scores text from 0 to 100. Higher is easier. Scores above 60 are considered standard reading level; 70+ is easy; 90+ is very easy. The formula considers sentence length and the number of syllables per word. It was originally developed for the US Navy to assess document readability.
The filler words detector flags eight common weak words: very, really, just, basically, quite, rather, somewhat, and literally. It also flags passive voice constructions (e.g. "was written", "is being processed"). Each detected word shows a suggested replacement or a recommendation to remove it entirely.
Social posts
The thread splitter always breaks at word boundaries so no word is cut mid-character. Each tweet is guaranteed to be 280 characters or fewer. Tweet numbers (e.g. "1/5") are not automatically prepended so you can customise the format — the copy button for each tweet shows the raw text with a number indicator in the copied result.
The Social Media Compatibility Matrix shows character limits for: X/Twitter (280 for posts, 160 for bio), Instagram (2,200 for captions, 150 for bio), LinkedIn (3,000 for posts, 125,000 for articles, 2,600 for summary), Facebook (63,206 for posts), TikTok (2,200 for captions), YouTube (5,000 for descriptions, 100 for title), Meta Ads (125 optimal primary text), Google Ads (30 for headline, 90 for description), and Pinterest (500 for pin descriptions).
Files and privacy
You can upload plain text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.docx), and PDF (.pdf) files. Word documents are parsed using mammoth.js entirely in your browser. PDFs are parsed using PDF.js text layer extraction. No file content leaves your device.
